George Van Eps
Undoubtedly, the first to bring the 7-string into the spotlight of jazz, or for that matter, any other type of music. He contracted Gretsch back in the 1940's to design & build a hollowbody 7-string. His 7th string is tuned down to Low A while the rest of the strings are in standard tuning. He used the 7th string to play "walking" bass parts while playing chords...at the same time!
